First elected as a Member of Parliament of the Cook Islands for the island of Mitiaro in 1994 General Election. Re-elected in the General Elections of 1999, 2004 and on 26th September 2006, Snap Election.
Appointed Deputy Speaker of Parliament in 1999.

Hon. Tangata Vavia began his primary education on his home island of Mitiaro then continued in Rarotonga at Avarua, Nikao and Nikao Side School. From 1964 to 1968 he attended Tereora College for secondary school education.
1998 Diploma in Public Management.
Hon. Tangata Vavia is married to Linda (nee Powell) from Rarotonga and they have four (4) children.
